European study on learning benefits for cross-border mobile artistsBrussels, 6 September 2009
Do artists acquire new skills and competences when crossing borders? Does mobility help them to be more creative and innovative and what else can they learn? A European comparative study examines the reality of cross-border mobility of artists and its impact on their professional development.
Project partners from 8 EU Member States - representing a mix of research and training institutions in the cultural sector- initiated the “Artists moving and learning” project with the aim to examine more closely the impact of mobility of artists in Europe from an educational and Life Long Learning perspective. More than 150 interviews are currently conducted with performing artists such as dancers, musicians and actors and visual artists in ten EU Member States: Belgium, France, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain and the UK. The analysis of these interviews will be part of a pan-European comparative study to be released in June 2010. This study seeks to prove that artists’ journeys across borders – within Europe and beyond – leads them to the acquisition of new skills and new forms of artistic expression. The study will also address recommendations how policy makers and professional organisations can further improve support of mobile artists in their career development, and how their mobility experiences could be better recognized as part of life-long learning paths.
The first provisional findings of the “Moving & learning” project will be presented at a mini-colloquium on 9 December in Brussels / Flagey, alongside a panel discussion on artistic mobility involving decision-makers, artists and researchers.
The comparative study will be launched at an international conference on 25 and 26 June 2010 in the context of the 33rd edition of the Inteatro International Theatre Festival in Polverigi/Italy.

Further project partners are Inteatro, Centro Internazionale per la Promozione e la ricerca teatrale, and Fondazione ATER Formazione from Italy; University of Deusto, Spain; the Budapest Observatory on financing culture in Eastern-Central Europe, Hungary; the Romanian Centre of Professional Training in Culture; and the French Joint Research Unit PACTE.

Press release: Launch of project website“Artists moving and learning”, an EU project within the Leonardo da Vinci programme for vocational education and training, have launched their website.
“Artists moving & learning” (October 2008-0ctober 2010) analyses the impact of mobility of artists in Europe from an educational and Life Long Learning perspective. What are the effects of their cross-border movements – through festivals, national or international mobility schemes, membership in professional organizations; as bursaries in artists’ residencies; or as guest artists in museums or galleries? Do they boost creativity and innovation? How do they impact on learner-teacher dynamics? And can non-formal learning resulting from artistic mobility be formalized by integrating them into artistic education?
To examine these questions, the “Artists moving & learning” partners conduct interviews with artists from the performing and visual arts in ten EU member states: Belgium, France, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia and Spain.
The result of the project will be a comparative study with recommendations targeting policy-makers and educators in the cultural and artistic area. The study will be presented at an international conference in Bologna in June 2010.
“Artists moving & learning” is led by ENCATC, the European network of higher educational institutes and training organisations for cultural management, and coordinated by Mediana sprl. Further project partners are Inteatro, Centro Internazionale per la Promozione e la ricerca teatrale, and Fondazione ATER Formazione from Italy; Universitad de la Iglesia de Deusto in Spain; the Budapest Observatory on financing culture in Eastern-Central Europe
Hungary; the Romanian Centre of Professional Training in Culture; and the French Joint Research Unit PACTE. This partnership represents an interesting mix of academic and technical institutions as well as public and private bodies from 8 EU member states, all with thorough experience in EU projects and research.
