Artistic mobility promotes cultural diversity. Cross-border mobility of artists, cultural professionals and art works is therefore at the core of the 2007 European Commission Communication “A European agenda for culture in a globalizing world” - in the Commission’s own words “the first ever European strategy for culture”, which was subsequently endorsed by the Council for Culture Ministers.

Artists moving & learning” (October 2008 - October 2010) is a project financed by the European Commission under the framework of the Lifelong Learning Program, - Multilateral Projects, Networks, Accompanying mesures -. It reflects the Community action on cross-border artistic mobility.

Project number: 143380-LLP-2008-BE-KA1-KA1SCR

Artists moving & learning” analyses the impact of mobility of artists in Europe from an educational and Life Long Learning perspective. What are the effects of their cross-border movements –as bursaries in artists’ residencies or as guest artists in festivals, museums or galleries? Does mobility boost the creativity and of artists? Can non-formal learning resulting from artistic mobility be formalised by integrating it into initial professional education for artists? How can instruments for life-long learning target better the needs of mobile artists? To examine these questions, the “Artists moving & learning” partners have conducted interviews with artists from the performing and visual arts in ten EU Member States: Belgium, France, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain and the UK.

The result of the “Artists moving & learning” project will be a comparative study targeting policy-makers and educators in the cultural and artistic area. The study will be presented at an international conference in October 2010.
