International and local practices in cultural tourism: the role of cultural and creative organizations

Education and Research Session 2022

Chairs: Elena Borin, Link Campus University, Italy, and Mara Cerquetti, University of Macerata, Italy.

Track related to the Research Interest Cluster (RIC) “Cultural Leadership in Transition Tourism”

Over the last decade, cultural tourism has undergone profound changes related to the broader reflection not only on its role in the socio-economic development of urban and rural territories (Borin, 2017; Cerquetti and Cutrini, 2021) but also on phenomena such as overtourism (De Luca et al., 2020), sustainability (García-Hernández, de la Calle-Vaquero and Yubero, 2017; Martinez Pino, 2018) and balance between tourists and locals (Colecchia, 2019). Especially in popular cultural destinations attracting international tourists, theoretical reflections and debates among academics and practitioners have been triggered in relation to sustainable development models (Capocchi et al., 2019) that could conciliate international opening of cultural destinations and the well-being and needs of local inhabitants, so as not to lose socio-cultural identities of cities and regions (Carr, 2020). This track aims to explore the role of cultural and creative industries, including cultural heritage and the arts, in this paradigm change, through theoretical contributions, case studies, best practices and other empirical research approaches.

The contributions to this track could address, but are not limited to, the following topics:

  • What is the role of cultural organizations in promoting a more sustainable cultural tourism?
  • What is the potential impact of cultural networks (both local and international) on tourism development paths?
  • How can we balance local communities’ well-being and international tourism development?
  • What are interesting cases of cultural tourism practices that promote new international and local tourism models both in urban and rural areas?
  • What are the partnerships, cooperation and alliances established by cultural and creative organizations in the development of a region or city as a tourism destination?
  • What is the role of technologies in cultural tourism practices? How have they influenced the practice and theoretical approaches to cultural tourism?
