Avril Joffe is the head of the Cultural Policy and Management Department at the Wits School of Arts, University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg and coordinates the Post Graduate programme. She is an economic sociologist with experience in the field of cultural policy, culture and development and the cultural economy specializing in mapping and measurement, programme design, implementation, stakeholder relations and evaluation. She recently completed her Diploma in Education in the field of Higher Education at Wits University. Avril is an active member of UNESCO’s Panel of Experts for Cultural Policy and Governance (2011-2022). Avril has completed numerous consultancy and evaluation projects in the field of culture and development on the continent. Avril is also a member of the International Advisory Council for NESTA’s Policy and Evidence Council for the Cultural and Creative Industries. As a member of the South African Ministerial Review Panel, Avril helped draft the revised cultural policy for South Africa adopted in February 2020. She is on the board of the National Arts Council and chairs its Audit and Risk Committee and a member of Im4theArts, a new arts and culture organization in South Africa.
